Our Veterinarians
Maire Mahanes, DVM
From Dr. Maire Mahanes:
I have been a resident of Charlottesville off and on since attending undergraduate school at
the University of Virginia. After graduating from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine,
I pursued small animal Veterinary practice in North Carolina. It was an invaluable experience. However,
Charlottesville called, and we returned. After practicing here for another 4 years, I opened Charlottesville Cat
Care Clinic in 1993. It was undoubtedly the best decision I could have made. Our clients are amazingly
caring and responsive. The cats are always challenging and keeping me on my toes. Our staff is unparalleled
in dedication and performance.
My family currently consists of my husband Forrest, our sons Ryan, Wyatt, and Isaac, our daughter Emmy, as
well as our cats Lola, Pinky, Beanie, and Maxine, and our dogs Moo and Ocho. Forrest is a project manager for a
video gaming company. Ryan is a videographer for the New York Jets, and Wyatt attends Monticello High School. Emmy
and Ike are busy being adorable babies.
Charlottesville has proven to be a wonderful place to be a veterinarian and raise a family. I am so pleased to be able to do both
with such community support. |

Michelle Andersen, DVM
From Dr. Michelle Andersen:
I joined the Charlottesville Cat Care team in July 2003, as an associate veterinarian. As a veterinary
student, I never anticipated becoming a feline-exclusive veterinarian. My goals were actually to pursue
a residency in oncology (cancer medicine). When the position at Cat Care was being considered, I realized
that all of my favorite patients and most memorable cases were felines!! I had a “gut” feeling that this
was the right place for me. Always trust your instincts…I wouldn’t trade my patients, clients, and colleagues
for anything.
I am originally from Hampton, VA and received my BA in biology from The University of Virginia After graduating
from Veterinary school at Virginia Tech in May 2001, I completed further training as an intern in small animal
medicine and surgery at the University of Minnesota in Saint Paul (It was a very cold year) Two months after
finishing my internship I married Dr John Andersen, my sweetheart from veterinary school. We moved to Cary, NC
while he completed his internship at NC State University. Our stay in North Carolina was shortened to only one
year when jobs in Charlottesville brought us back home to Virginia.
John and I were blessed with our first child on April 26, 2006. Whitcomb Darden is our precious baby boy who has
brought so much joy to our lives. We have two beloved pets, Kaya and Lucy. Kaya is a boxer/shepherd mutt who
was adopted from the Roanoke SPCA. Lucy is a tortoise shell kitty who was found near the Duck Pond on the campus
of Virginia Tech. We work very hard at spoiling them rotten.
John and I love living and working in this fabulous community. We are both big UVA fans and look forward to football
season every year. Our lives stay busy with friends, family, and lots of outdoor activities. We
both love to snow ski, enjoy hiking in the Blue Ridge, and running.
I find my job very rewarding. Each day is different and a learning experience. I feel fortunate
to work with smart, caring, friendly people whom I also consider my friends. |
